This app presents a preview of the new release from Hooked on Phonics. It starts where Learn to Read leaves off, at a beginning-of-the-year First Grade reading level. It’s for children who have completed Kindergarten (or the Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read app) who can sound out simple 3-letter words and are just starting to read on their own. It teaches new skills like beginning consonant blends (such as –ch and -sh) and first grade sight words. This app helps build fluency and develops confidence to foster reading success.

As with all Hooked on Phonics apps, kids can use it on their own, with just a little help—and a whole lot of encouragement—from their parents.

This single Step features four complete Lessons, with three games for each Lesson. Each of the four Lessons ends with a story that your child will learn to read all by himself.

Try to encourage your child to follow the lesson from start to finish, just one 10-minute session each day—or whatever works with your schedule. Return to any lesson as many times as you want, until your child is comfortable and confident with the new words and sounds.

What You Do

Each lesson follows this pattern:

Blend Sounds... Read Words... Learn Sight Words … Read a Story!

Blend Sounds
Games teach how different sounds (or phonemes) are blended together to form various words.

Read Words
Games that give kids practice reading words with common patterns.

Learn Sight Words

Read a Story!
Custom written to use all the skills learned in the lesson that precedes it.

At last! Kids get to show off what they have learned by reading an eBook—on their own! If your child has any troubles, just go back and practice the previous activities until he’s ready to move on. There’s no rush. Have fun.

Celebrate Success
This program has two extra features to make learning fun:
My Words is an interactive whiteboard that lets kids build and play with the words and letters highlighted in the lessons.

My Library showcases nine additional eBooks from the original Hooked on Phonics app, so kids can practice reading—alone or out loud. (Note: The 9th book Slim Sam cannot be opened until your child has completed all the lessons.)

The Big Picture
Encourage your child to play with each Hooked on Phonics Lesson until he can easily read the words taught in it. For additional practice, go to My Library and have your child try reading the eBooks there. These stories will give your child opportunities to read the words he just learned and make him feel proud of his accomplishments. Even though children enjoy these apps, Hooked on Phonics apps and eBooks are unlike video games where children are encouraged to rush through each level and move on to the next. When learning how to read, your child should go at his own pace and not move on to the next level until he has mastered the previous level. This system is comprehensive, so if your child is experiencing difficulties with anything, go back and review the previous Step.

Remember, learning to read should be fun, and can be when your child feels a sense of pride and accomplishment, as well as support from you.
